Continued service at the APL
Backgrounds and experiences of all kinds prepare people to succeed at APL-UW. Andy Dietrich found this to be especially true when he applied his background as an intelligence analyst with the United States Air Force into a career of “continued service” at APL-UW.
During his time with the Air Force, Andy served in numerous units around the world, such as Germany, Korea, and many bases within the United States. After 24 illustrious years in the Air Force, Andy retired as a Master Sergeant and began his transition into the civilian sector in 2020.
Meet Andy Dietrich
How I came to APL-UW
After completing an internship with Columbia Bank, I realized I still wanted to “serve.” I found the security manager position at the APL and was intrigued by APL’s mission.
Who helped me along the way
Fellow veterans at the APL helped my transition. The APL FSO, Ben Adams, is a fellow Air Force retiree. He understood the language and challenges of transitioning out of the military sector.
During his transition, Andy took advantage of the military Transition Assistance Career Skills Program. He earned a selection into the Hiring Our Heroes (HOH) program, where he completed a fellowship with the Columbia Bank. Andy realized his desire to find a career of continued “service.”
After his fellowship, Andy searched for jobs in intelligence analysis. Although specific intelligence analyst jobs were unavailable to him at the time, Andy expanded his horizons to security. He found the security manager position at the APL, applied, and joined the APL team in 2020.
Fortunately, Andy’s military experience as an intelligence analyst smoothly translated to the needs and capabilities required of the security management position at the APL. He expressed that having a fellow veteran not only within the organization but within his hierarchy was significantly helpful to his transition. Having someone who had also gone through that transition and understood the difficulties helped Andy face his own challenges head on.
