All applicants are to apply via UW Hires. If you do not already have a profile, you will first be directed to create a profile. Once created, you can start the application process for the posted job opening desired. The application process is generally broken down into three phases:
- Phase 1: Online Assessment
Begin your application process with the online assessment on UW Hires. Before beginning your application, we recommend to set aside time to allow yourself to complete the process in one sitting since you cannot partially complete the assessment and finish it later. Be prepared to provide a cover letter and resume or curriculum vitae (CV). *TIP: You will need to copy + paste your cover letter and resume/CV into the UW Hires portal. Be aware that special spacing and certain characters may not transfer over. - Phase 2: Interview
If selected as an interview candidate, you will be notified by the hiring manager to schedule a follow-up interview(s). - Phase 3: Post-Interview
If selected after the interview(s), you will be required to complete a Sexual Misconduct Disclosure and thorough background check.
Experiencing some technical difficulties during your application process? For assistance or general questions about the application process, visit UW Jobs or contact the UW Hires help desk at 206-543-2544 (voice), 206-685-2832 (TTY), or uwhires@uw.edu.
Applications for staff positions are first reviewed by UW’s Human Resources team, then are released to APL for further consideration by the hiring manager for the position. If you don’t hear back right away, don’t be worried! Timeframes for recruitments do vary, especially when considering that many of our hiring managers from research departments can be conducting fieldwork for extended periods of time.
APL encourages professional growth and development for our employees. It’s a key enabler of the Laboratory’s continuing success! Just like our research, APL’s staffing needs evolve and expand all the time! We post new positions regularly, so we recommend you check back often.

We approach internships with a great deal of flexibility. Over time, we’ve found this is the best way to make a successful match between the interests and availability of both the intern and their host. Please send us a message through our Connect page. Tell us about yourself, such as where you are in your academic career, your area of study, and if there is a particular area of APL’s research or administration that interests you. If you are a transitioning service member, tell us about your timeline and areas of interest. We’ll be in touch!
