Making vision into reality
A true professional in his craft, Peter (Pete) Frane is the manager of the APL-UW’s machine shop. He manages a group of six fabrication engineers and is responsible for the shop’s daily operations.
We’re pushing our research to the limits of what’s possible, and our technical and software teams create both the foundation and the cutting edge that gets us there. Your opportunity to make an impact across the world is bigger now than ever before, and growing.
Here, you watch your work’s impact unfold every day. From our University of Washington campus location in the backyard of Seattle’s booming tech industry, our renowned team produces cutting-edge technologies that are immediately put to use to make a difference for some of our region’s, nation’s, and world’s biggest challenges.

A jack of all trades, Jennie not only provides support for deploying and recovering equipment in the field, but she also does work on the front and back end – building, testing, and refurbishing gear for future work.
You’ll be part of something bigger at APL-UW, working to bring projects from inception to rapid, real-world deployment. Our work is not theoretical—together with scientists, as well as mechanical, electrical, field, and software engineers, you’ll respond to sponsors’ complex scientific and engineering problems by bringing the impossible to life.
We’re also proud to be a part of the University of Washington, and to provide our team full access to all of the resources and connections it offers. This includes UW benefits such as a fully-matched and immediately-vested retirement plan, generous vacation and holiday leave, and tuition exemption. APL-UW benefits also include funding for staff development.
