APL SURP Opportunities

The APL SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAM (SURP)

SURP provides undergraduate students the opportunities to experience and conduct research, participate in professional development, build community with young scientists, and learn to navigate a career in maritime and oceanographic science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) fields.

About SURP

SURP is an APL-UW hosted internship program. SURP internships are awarded to undergraduates who are currently registered at universities, community colleges, and technical schools. Graduating seniors are also eligible to apply. All projects are matched to the student’s level of experience.

Applicants may be studying any STEM field but must have an interest in ocean sciences and other types of research conducted at APL-UW.

Terms of SURP Opportunities

  • Full-time summer internship
  • Internship begins in mid-June and ends mid-August
  • Interns receive a $6,000 stipend
  • Housing and limited travel expenses are provided

As a SURP intern, you will…

  • Gain hands-on experience with oceanographic research and technology
  • Explore different professions in oceanographic science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
  • Gain valuable experience with research techniques
  • Learn from and collaborate with expert mentors within the APL-UW
  • Collaborate with other students across the UW campus as well as other universities

The SURP application window is now closed for Summer 2025.
